Solar Panels for Less: UK Grants and Savings in 2026

Solar panels can cut your electricity bills for 25 years — but the upfront cost puts people off. The good news: there's real help available in 2026 if you know where to look. Here's what's actually on offer.

Is There a Free Solar Panel Grant?

Let's be straight: there is no single nationwide scheme giving free solar panels to every UK homeowner. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. But several genuine schemes can cut your costs dramatically — and some households may get significant funding.

Warm Homes: Local Grant (England)

The best current route in England. Eligible low-income households in properties rated EPC D to G can get up to £15,000 toward energy upgrades — and solar panels plus battery storage can be included after assessment. Funding depends on your local council, so availability varies by area.

0% VAT on Solar Installations

Until 31 March 2027, professionally installed solar panels and battery storage carry 0% VAT instead of 20%. On a typical system that's a four-figure saving before any grant is even involved — and it stacks with the schemes above.

Smart Export Guarantee: Get Paid for Surplus Power

Not a grant, but real money: the Smart Export Guarantee pays you for electricity your panels export to the grid (typically 4–20p per kWh depending on supplier). Your system must be installed by an MCS-certified installer to qualify.

What About the Rest of the UK?

  • Scotland: Home Energy Scotland offers up to £6,000 (£1,250 grant + £4,750 interest-free loan) for solar
  • Wales: the Nest scheme offers advice and funding for eligible low-income households
  • Solar Together: community group-buying schemes run by councils that cut prices through bulk buying

No Upfront Cost Options

Don't qualify for a grant? Many installers now offer solar with £0 upfront and spread payments — the monthly saving on bills can outweigh the finance cost. Finance subject to status.

Who May Qualify?

Every home is assessed individually — your EPC rating, household income and location all matter. The only way to know what you're entitled to is a free eligibility check.
