Heat Pumps for Less: Your 2026 UK Grant Guide

Thinking about swapping your old boiler for a heat pump? The UK government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) could knock thousands off the cost — and right now the grants are at their most generous ever. Here's what you need to know.

What Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme helps property owners in England and Wales replace fossil-fuel heating (like gas, oil or LPG boilers) with cleaner alternatives. Instead of you claiming cash back, your MCS-certified installer applies for the grant and deducts it from your invoice — so you pay less upfront.

How Much Can You Get?

  • £7,500 – air source, ground source and water source heat pumps
  • £2,500 – air-to-air heat pumps
  • £5,000 – biomass boilers (rural, off-gas-grid properties only)

And there's more: eligible off-gas-grid homes (oil or LPG heated, no mains gas connection) in England and Wales can currently get an uplift to £9,000 for an air source or ground source heat pump — but only until 31 March 2027.

Who May Qualify?

You may qualify if you own a property in England or Wales and you're replacing a fossil-fuel or electric heating system. Every home is assessed individually, and factors like your current system and property type matter — so the only way to know for sure is a free eligibility check.

What's Changed Recently?

  • EPC requirement scrapped (28 April 2026) – you no longer need a valid Energy Performance Certificate to apply
  • 0% VAT on energy-saving installations until 31 March 2027 – the grant and the VAT cut stack
  • £9,000 uplift for eligible off-grid homes (air/ground source heat pumps only), also ending 31 March 2027

How to Apply

  1. Get a quote from an MCS-certified installer
  2. They apply for the BUS grant on your behalf
  3. The grant comes straight off your bill
