Warm Home Discount 2026: How to Get £150 Off Your Energy Bills

What is the Warm Home Discount? The Warm Home Discount is a government scheme that gives eligible households £150 off their electricity bills each winter. It's not a loan, not a voucher you apply for in most cases, and you don't pay it back — it's a straightforward rebate applied to your account. The discount is usually applied between October and March. If you have a prepayment meter, you'll typically receive it as vouchers or credit instead. Important: Fairway Energy is an independent eligibility-check service. We are not the government, an official grant administrator, or an installer. Who gets the Warm Home Discount? Eligibility works slightly differently depending on where you live. Here's the breakdown for 2026. England and Wales: two core groups Core Group 1: If you (or your partner) receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, you should get the discount automatically. The government matches DWP records with energy suppliers — you don't need to apply. Core Group 2: If you receive certain means-tested benefits — such as Universal Credit, income-related ESA or JSA, Income Support, Housing Benefit, or Child/Working Tax Credits — and your home is assessed as having high energy costs, you should also get it automatically. The "high energy cost" test is based on your property's characteristics, not your actual bills. In both cases, the key word is automatically: if the data-matching identifies you, your supplier applies the £150 without you lifting a finger. Scotland: core group plus broader group Scotland works similarly for the core group (Pension Credit Guarantee Credit = automatic). But Scotland also has a Broader Group: if you receive certain qualifying benefits and your supplier offers a broader group scheme, you may need to apply directly to your energy supplier — and these places are limited, so early application matters. If you're in Scotland and on a low income, check your supplier's website as soon as the scheme year opens. Broader Group places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis by most suppliers, and they can run out well before winter — setting a reminder for yourself when the scheme opens each autumn is one of the simplest ways to make sure you don't miss out. Northern Ireland The Warm Home Discount doesn't operate in Northern Ireland — different support arrangements apply there. Do I need to apply? For most people in England and Wales: no. The whole point of the data-matching system is that eligible households are found automatically. If you qualify, your electricity supplier applies the £150 rebate to your account — you'll usually see it as a credit on your bill between October and March. You may need to take action if: You're in Scotland and fall into the Broader Group — apply to your supplier early You believe you qualify but haven't received the discount by late winter — contact your supplier You've recently switched supplier — check the new supplier is part of the scheme You're on a prepayment meter — the discount arrives differently (vouchers or automatic credit), so make sure your supplier has your up-to-date contact details Which suppliers take part? All large energy suppliers are required to participate in the Warm Home Discount. Smaller suppliers may join voluntarily — so if you're with a small supplier and think you qualify, it's worth confirming they offer it before you need it. If you switch supplier mid-winter after receiving the discount, you don't lose it — it's already been applied. But if you switch before it's applied, the obligation sits with whoever supplies you at the qualifying date, so timing matters. What if I should have got it but didn't? First, don't panic — and don't assume you've missed out. Steps to take: Check the timing. Discounts are applied between October and March. If it's early in the window, yours may simply not have landed yet. Check your bills and account. Look for a £150 credit line — it's easy to miss among estimated readings and direct debit adjustments. Contact your supplier. Ask specifically about the Warm Home Discount and whether their records show you as eligible. Check your benefit status. Eligibility is based on the benefits you received on a specific qualifying date — if your circumstances changed around that date, it can affect the outcome. Prepayment meters: contact your supplier to make sure they have your current details so vouchers or credit reach you. Warm Home Discount vs other winter support The £150 Warm Home Discount sits alongside other support you may also receive — they're separate schemes: Winter Fuel Payment: for pensioners, paid automatically to most who qualify — different scheme, different rules Cold Weather Payments: £25 for each 7-day period of very cold weather, for people on certain benefits Household Support Fund: local council funding for struggling households — criteria vary by area Receiving one doesn't disqualify you from the others. If money is tight this winter, check what your council offers too. Can the discount help with more than bills? £150 off your bill is welcome — but if your home is expensive to heat, the bigger win is using less energy in the first place. Households on means-tested benefits may also qualify for: ECO4 — fully funded boilers, insulation and heating upgrades for eligible homes (runs to 31 December 2026, though suppliers are closing early) Boiler Upgrade Scheme — £7,500 towards a heat pump for eligible homeowners in England and Wales A one-off rebate helps this winter; insulation or a new heating system helps every winter after it. It's worth checking both. FAQs When will I get the £150? Usually between October and March. Suppliers apply it at different times within that window. Does it come off gas or electricity? Electricity, in almost all cases. (If you don't have an electricity account with a participating supplier, speak to your supplier about your options.) I'm on a prepayment meter — how do I get it? Usually as vouchers you redeem at a top-up point, or as automatic credit — it depends on your supplier and meter type. Make sure your supplier has your current contact details. Do I need to reapply every year? In England and Wales, no — eligibility is reassessed each year through data matching. In Scotland's Broader Group, you typically do need to apply each year, and places are limited. What if I change supplier? Check your new supplier participates in the scheme. If you switch after the discount is applied, you've already got it; if you switch before, it depends on timing. Nine ways to cut your energy bills beyond the discount The £150 helps — but the households that pay the least are the ones that use the least. None of these cost much: Turn the thermostat down 1°C. You almost certainly won't feel it, and it can shave around 10% off heating bills. Only heat the rooms you use. Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) let you turn down spare bedrooms without freezing the living room. Bleed your radiators. Cold spots at the top mean trapped air — bleeding them takes five minutes and a radiator key. Draught-proof doors and windows. Cheap self-adhesive strips and letterbox brushes make a noticeable difference. Wash at 30°C and use eco modes. Modern detergents clean fine at lower temperatures; dishwasher and washing machine eco cycles use far less energy. Switch things off standby. It won't make you rich, but across a dozen devices it adds up. Use your heating controls properly. A timer plus thermostat beats "on all day" for most households — heat the home when you're in it. Check your tariff. If you haven't compared in a year, you may be on an expensive standard variable rate. It takes ten minutes on a comparison site. Ask about insulation. Loft insulation is one of the cheapest upgrades per pound saved — and if you're on benefits, ECO4 may fund it free. Check what else you may qualify for The Warm Home Discount's £150 is automatic for most eligible households — but it's just one piece of support. If you're on a low income or means-tested benefits, you may also qualify for fully funded home energy upgrades through ECO4, or a £7,500 heat pump grant through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
